I would like my child to be Christened

St Luke's Church Barnsley Road, South Elmsall Pontefract, West Yorks WF9 2AD 01977 658505
For many parents it has become a family tradition to have their child christened while they are still young. We recognise that some churches continue to practice child baptism or "Christening" but at St Luke's we believe that the Bible teaches that the purpose of baptism is to publicly identify yourself as a believer in Jesus Christ. Service Times

Sunday Morning 10:00am - 11:30am
Sunday Evening 6:00pm - 7:30pm

Is dedication the same as infant baptism or christening?

It is the practice of St Luke's Church to dedicate children. In the Bible, we find parents bringing their children to Jesus. He held them and prayed for them and blessed them and told us to welcome them.

At St Luke's we welcome children and for those parents who want to thank God for their child we provide a special service.

Parents attend the church for several weeks beforehand and then a Child Dedication Service is organised to give thanks to God for their child.

Child Dedication Service

Child Dedication Services are usually held on a Sunday morning. Parents are able to choose a special song which will be played during the service. At the appropriate time the parents and God-parents will bring their child to the front of the church.

Parents make a commitment before God to love and protect their child and as far as they are able to introduce them to the Christian faith. God parents make a similar promise before God to support the child's parents. Then the church will offer up special prayers to God giving thanks for your child and asking Him to bless your child.

If you would like to discuss having a child dedication service or if you would like to meet with our senior minister then please contact the church office.
